About the park
Ravines give Gorky Park its distinctive relief, crossed by two bridges and marked deeper inside by a large artificial waterfall. A wooded section lies alongside open lawns and avenues, while ski trails run through the park’s interior. The slope towards the Kazanka and a restored descent link the upper park with the riverside, whose present form differs from that of the old park.

Since the 19th century, the park has been a favourite place for recreation among Kazan residents; its landscape earned it the nickname “Russian Switzerland”. In the Soviet period it became Kazan’s central park, with amusement rides. A descent led to a beach on the Kazanka, and from the 1970s until the early 1990s a cable car carried people from the park to the shore in open, two-seat cabins. During the 2000s, construction of a road to Millennium Bridge reduced the park’s area; the official beach was removed and the rides taken away. A major reconstruction was decided on in 2013, and its first phase was completed by City Day in 2014. It brought Kazan’s first interactive fountain with light and music.
