About the park

Hermitage Garden lies between Marusovsky and Butlerovsky hills, close to two ravines, in the built-up historic centre of Kazan. Its roughly four hectares follow a noticeably uneven slope, with paths and stairways crossing the rising ground; Shchapova Street forms its western boundary. Dense greenery includes almost 500 large and medium-sized trees, with plantings from before the Revolution in the garden’s centre. Nearly all the trees have markedly crooked trunks, a feature local lore links to the garden’s grim past.

Before the garden existed, the site held the estate of the nobleman Vorozhtsov, which burnt down in 1848. According to local legend, Vorozhtsov was cruel: he beat serfs and buried those who died in the garden without funeral rites. Before the Revolution, people came here to stroll; in the first decades afterwards, the garden effectively served as the city’s main culture and recreation park. It had a summer theatre, a bandstand and a library. Fyodor Chaliapin sang there, circus performances were held, and the orchestra of Salikh Saydashev performed. The garden fell into neglect during the war and was later restored. A summer cinema and children’s playground, built in the 1950s, lasted only a short time. Further landscaping took place for Kazan’s millennium celebrations and again in 2012.

Birds recorded nearby include the mallard, rock pigeon and hooded crow.
