About the lake

On the Valdai Hills, Lake Vselug is a broad, north–south reach of the upper Volga. The river flows into it from Lake Sterzh, and the lake is a widened section of the river channel. Vselug is 14 kilometres long and up to 4 kilometres wide, with an average depth of 7.7 metres and a maximum depth of 16 metres. Its gently sloping shores are edged by a 15–20-metre-wide shoal of gravel and boulders.

Vselug is the second link in a chain of four large Upper Volga lakes: Lake Sterzh lies upstream and Lake Peno downstream, with short stretches of the Volga connecting them. Together, the four lakes form the only remaining large natural lake system on the Volga. The Upper Volga Beishlot regulates the water level. Passenger service once ran for 60 kilometres across the lake, from Peno via Shirkovo to Kokovkino, aboard the motor vessel Zarnitsa. A monastery stood on Zosima and Savvatiy Island until the 1930s; two wooden churches now stand there. Nyt’yo Island lies opposite Shirkov Pogost, where the wooden Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist stands on the shore. It dates to 1694.

Birds recorded nearby include the grey heron, white-tailed eagle and common buzzard.
