About the park
At Ulyanovka, the Sablinka and Tosna rivers cut canyons through rock layers from the Cambrian and Ordovician periods. The height of the Sablinka waterfall varies from year to year, ranging from two to four metres as water flow and erosion change; at times, the stream dries up completely. The Tosna has a second waterfall, also known as the Gertovsky.

The underground workings at Sablino began as quartz-sand mines supplying glassmakers. Most extraction took place from the second half of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth, when industrial and building growth in St Petersburg created a strong demand for glass. Mining continued intermittently afterwards, until the Second World War. Once extraction stopped, collapses and flooding broke the workings into separate sections. Nearby are ancient burial mounds, the site where Alexander Nevsky encamped before a battle with the Swedes, and the former Pustynka estate, associated with Count Alexey Konstantinovich Tolstoy.
Birds recorded nearby include the common chaffinch, common chiffchaff, great tit, European robin and marsh tit.
