About the lake

At Senezh, a broad expanse of water is part of Solnechnogorsk's townscape. One shore has an embankment, piers and a municipal beach, while coniferous woodland surrounds other stretches. Open water, trees and everyday town life come together around a lake with several different kinds of shoreline.

The area's water history is tied to the Catherine Canal between the Sestra and Istra rivers. Construction began in 1826, and a dam was used to store water. This engineering history explains why Senezh is called both a lake and a reservoir: its present form developed alongside an attempt to connect the two rivers.

A combined survey in January 2025 recorded mallards and hooded crows at Lake Senezh and the nearby section of the Sestra River around Sergeyevka and Sestrorechye. In winter, start by scanning the water and shoreline, then check the trees: bare branches make perched birds easier to spot.
