About the lake

At Istra Reservoir, woodland reaches the water's edge. Along the shore beside Polevshchinsky Forest, spruces grow with maples, limes and oaks. Lower down the slope are alders and tall plants on damp ground, with reeds beside the water. The landscape changes within a short distance, from old tree crowns to waterside vegetation. Elsewhere, wooded shores sit alongside villages, beaches and holiday facilities, giving the same reservoir quite different landscapes.

The reservoir was filled in 1935 after a dam was built near Rakovo. Its water flows towards Moscow along the Istra and Moskva rivers, storing runoff for the capital's water supply. Before it was built, the Istra area was considered for a canal linking the Volga and Moskva rivers, but the canal was eventually routed elsewhere.

Mallard, grey heron, common gull and black kite have been recorded along the shore by Polevshchinsky Forest. Start by scanning the open water, then check the shoreline vegetation and the sky above the wooded slope. This helps you notice birds at different distances from the shore.
