About the forest

Striginskiy bor lies on the left bank of the Oka, between the Striginskiy and Sartakovskiy bridges, at the southern edge of Avtozavodsky District. Pine and spruce are the most common trees, with occasional shipbuilding pines. Rarer plants include spring pheasant’s-eye, wood anemone, white water lily and winged hornwort, giving the forest park both woodland and aquatic flora.

In the early 1930s, workers from the Gorky Automobile Plant came to plant the future park. It was created for the factory employees’ recreation, then gradually became a public forest park as recreation centres, cafés and beaches opened; a river tram began running there later. When rare plants requiring protection grew in the forest park, residents of Nizhny Novgorod and nearby settlements took part in securing its designation as a nature monument.

Birds recorded nearby include the fieldfare, European starling and Eurasian blackcap.
