About the lake

Biserovo has low shores, shallow water and dense vegetation along the water's edge. Willows, birches and black alders grow along its banks. Wet patches of cattails and sedges matter as much as the open water: together, these habitats provide places for birds to feed and nest. The lake is part of a wetland complex used by migrating birds as a stopover.

Biserovo occupies an ancient channel once used by glacial meltwater. It is no more than five metres deep, with much of its life concentrated around the shallows and shoreline vegetation. The lake is protected as a regional natural monument. The surrounding meadows, woodland and waterside vegetation have a separate protective buffer zone.

Great Crested Grebes and Mallards have been recorded on the lake, along with breeding colonies of Common Gulls and Black Terns. During courtship, the grebes turn their heads to show their partners their elaborate head plumes. Try following one pair for a while to pick out the movements of their display.
