About the forest

Pine stands in Alyoshkinsky Forest grow alongside birches and broadleaved trees. This is a woodland site in north-west Moscow, where birdwatching centres on trunks, tree crowns and undergrowth. Changes in the tree species and density of the woodland create different feeding places and cover. In spring, before the leaves fully open, it is easier to match a call to the bird on a branch; later the canopy becomes much harder to see through.

The name preserves the memory of the village of Alyoshkino. During the twentieth century the city expanded towards the forest, and the Moscow Ring Road divided the once connected woodland. The Moscow section near Severnoye Tushino is only one part of the larger forest. Even a short distance can change the setting here: beside residential neighbourhoods, woodland continues across the city boundary.

Long-eared Owl is recorded in Alyoshkinsky Forest, sheltering among dense branches by day. Winter observations on 18 December 2021 add another view of its bird life, recording Great Tit, Eurasian Blue Tit and Eurasian Nuthatch. A Eurasian Nuthatch is particularly interesting to follow on a trunk: it can descend headfirst while searching the bark. When it pauses, its black eye stripe and pointed bill become apparent. Winter's more open view makes these feeding movements easier to see than beneath dense summer foliage.
