About the park
Moscow Hermitage Garden occupies much of the odd-numbered side of Karetny Ryad, beginning at Uspensky Lane. Set among the dense buildings of central Moscow, it brings together theatre buildings and an open-air summer stage. Architect A. U. Belevich was commissioned to plan the garden; the original design included two open-air music stages and awnings for a buffet. The Hermitage, Novaya Opera and Sphera theatres now operate in the garden.

The summer garden, first called New Hermitage, opened on 18 (30) June 1894 at the initiative of theatre entrepreneur Yakov Shchukin. To light the garden and its theatre, he brought in a private, stationary diesel power station from abroad—the first in Moscow. On 26 May (7 June) 1896, the garden hosted the Lumière brothers’ first publicly accessible film screening in Moscow. In the autumn of 1898, the Moscow Art Theatre opened on the garden’s stage; its first four seasons were performed here, including the premieres of The Seagull and Uncle Vanya.
Birds recorded nearby include rock pigeon, hooded crow, mallard, great tit and house sparrow.
