About the park
The pond covers 9,900 square metres—almost a hectare—and reaches 2.5 metres in depth. Its open water lies within a small public garden amid dense city buildings; planted greenery covers 7,924 square metres, while paths and paved areas account for 6,323. Along the water’s edge, paving meets planted ground. In 2003, the banks were reinforced, trees were planted, and rubbish and silt were cleared from the pond.

Before the seventeenth century, the site was Goat Marsh. The marsh was associated with Chertory Brook and with Kabanka and Bubna, left tributaries of the Presnya. In 1683, Patriarch Joachim ordered the marshes drained and three fishponds dug. After the fire of 1812, two ponds were filled in and only the present pond was preserved. The former marsh became a group of ponds, but the plural name endured after only one remained.
Birds recorded nearby include rock pigeon, hooded crow, mallard, great tit and house sparrow.
