About the park
Between the Fontanka and Sadovaya Street, Yusupov Garden took shape as a formal estate garden. The son of Prince G. D. Yusupov laid out two ponds, canals and flowerbeds. In a later plan, the garden was divided into northern and southern sections; the southern section had ponds with islands, joined to one another by chain bridges and to the shore by wooden bridges. Water and these crossings shaped the layout of this part of the garden.

In 1724, Peter I gave the estate to Prince G. D. Yusupov. In the 1790s, Nikolai Yusupov commissioned Giacomo Quarenghi to rebuild the palace and redesign the garden. In spring 1863, Alexander II ordered part of the garden opened to the public. It soon became a place for city recreation: balloons were launched there and amusements held, while winter brought skating rinks and ice slides. The garden’s sporting history is especially tied to its rink. In February 1896, it hosted the world speed skating championship, and the following day the first world figure skating championship was held there. Nikolai Panin-Kolomenkin studied at the garden’s figure-skating school; he was the first Russian Olympic champion.
