About the lake
Exposed limestone along the shore gives Lake Sukko a pale blue-white colour, occasionally an emerald one. The artificial lake lies in the low mountains of the Abrau Peninsula, 40 metres above sea level at the foot of Mount Shirokaya. Its curved basin occupies Baidasarova ravine, along a temporary watercourse that is a right tributary of the Sukko River. The water is fresh and the bottom silty; it is deepest by the dam, while the northern end becomes shallower in autumn. Junipers, oriental hornbeam and rock oak grow along the banks. In the north, a grove of swamp cypress stands in the water; as the lake level falls in autumn, the trees are left on the shore.

The reservoir was built for irrigation and fish farming. In Abrau’s dry Mediterranean climate, its freshwater is regarded as a potential reserve for the region. Since 14 September 1983, a 0.4-hectare area in the northern part of the reservoir has been protected as the regional botanical natural monument Swamp Cypress.
The local birdlife includes the gray heron, greylag goose, common quail and sand martin. Barn swallows, Eurasian jays, European greenfinches and Eurasian blue tits have also been recorded nearby.
