About the park
At Utrish on the Abrau Peninsula, one of the clearest expressions of the eastern Mediterranean landscape on the northern Black Sea coast survives. Dry, open juniper-pistachio woodland lies alongside denser oak-hornbeam forest. Its characteristic plants include tall and stinking junipers, pistachio, Pitsunda pine and smoke tree, with Tertiary relicts and endemic species among them. The pistachio-juniper woodland is considered the oldest plant community here. Mediterranean species make up 62.4 per cent of its flora, compared with 40.9 per cent in the oak-hornbeam forest.

The conservation history helps distinguish Bolshoy Utrish from Utrish State Nature Reserve: they are not names for the same area. Bolshoy Utrish became a wildlife sanctuary in 1994, and the state nature reserve was established on its basis on 2 September 2010. A government directive issued in 2001 had already called for the reserve to be created by 2010. This was not simply a renaming: regulations and boundaries were approved in 2011. Under the version that took effect on 10 June 2011, the reserve comprised four separate sections, and some land from the former sanctuary was excluded, including juniper-pistachio woodland near the second and third lagoons.
Birds recorded nearby include the great cormorant, eared grebe, Arctic loon, great crested grebe and common chaffinch.
