About the lake
Kiziltashskiy Liman has an irregular, roughly rounded outline, stretching about 18.5 km from west to east and 14 km from north to south, with an area of 137 km². A channel links it to Tsokur Liman to the north; a strait connects it with Bugaz Liman, which in turn opens to the Black Sea. Seawater also enters Kiziltashskiy Liman, making its water brackish. Dark, soft, pliable mud covers the bottom and has a strong smell of hydrogen sulphide.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, most of the Kuban’s waters flowed into the liman. Gradual silting shifted the river channel northwards; later, freshwater flow was restored by clearing the channel of the Old Kuban. The bottom deposits are also harvested as peloids, and a mullet farm operates in the liman. Its name comes from the Turkic word “kiziltash”, meaning “red stone”.
Birds recorded nearby include great cormorant, Eurasian kestrel, black-headed gull, Dalmatian pelican and great egret.
