About the lake

On the elevated north-western shore, the slopes of the mud hills Polivadina and Makotra drop to the water in a cliff about two metres high. Bugazskiy Liman covers 35 km² in the south of the Taman Peninsula, stretching south-east to north-west along the Black Sea coast. The narrow, low Bugaz Spit separates it from the sea, while another spit divides it from Kiziltash Liman; Bugazskiy Liman is part of the Kiziltash group of Kuban limans.

The name is linked to the Turkic word “bugaz”, meaning “throat”. The liman’s salinity reflects a change in the Kuban’s course. Until the beginning of the nineteenth century, the river flowed into the Black Sea, and the liman was fresh, carrying river water through it. After the Kuban changed course towards the Sea of Azov, the liman became salty and lost its former purpose.

Birds recorded nearby include the common shelduck, white wagtail and crested lark.
