About the park
Mires and floating vegetation mats surround Lake Ozeretskoye, sometimes blurring the boundary between water and land. Open water, dense shoreline vegetation and wet meadows provide distinct bird habitats. Together they form a lake-and-mire system through which the Vorya flows; parts of its channel disappear into the wetland vegetation. Recreational use of the sanctuary is prohibited.

The sanctuary was established in 1981. It protects the entire lake basin between Ozeretskoye, Zhitnikovo and Prokshino. The lake, covering roughly twenty hectares, is the open-water part of a much larger complex. Its surrounding mires and wet meadows preserve habitat for waterbirds and are connected to the water regime of both the lake and the Vorya.
Great Crested Grebes dive for food on the lake and carry small chicks on their backs. Common Moorhens keep to the shoreline vegetation, while Mallards use the open water. Common Terns feed above the lake, Western Marsh Harriers use the wetlands, and Common Snipe occur on wet ground. These birds depend on the whole habitat mosaic: open water, dense shore vegetation and saturated soil.
